Are you concerned by the number of breast cancers in your family and the impact on future generations? The Familial Breast Cancer Research Unit at Women’s College Research Institute is recruiting participants for their study Risk Factor Analysis for Familial Breast Cancer. This is the only long-term study of women with a strong family history of breast cancer who do not carry a mutation in one of the two breast cancer genes (BRCA1/BRCA2). Its purpose is to better understand the interactions between various factors that may be associated with breast cancer development in women from high-risk families. University Health Network and Women's College Hospital in Toronto have opened a trial to study the use of Alloderm in one-stage direct to implant breast reconstruction following skin sparing mastectomy. Women with breast cancer living in Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the NorthWest Territories who have limited access to in-person support programs are invited to take part in a study comparing an online support group with a home based self-help workbook. If you are receiving treatment now or completed primary treatment within the last three years, have limited access to support services, are experiencing distress and would like to learn more about coping with breast cancer, are comfortable using a computer and the internet, and can spend 1.5 hours per week participating in the program, please contact the researchers at osgstudy@cancerboard.ab.ca or 1-877-355-3214 (toll free). The Dalhousie University School of Medicine, Department of Anatomy is conducting a study of people’s knowledge about reproductive-related cancers, their treatment options, and side effects. The study addresses testicular and prostate cancers in males, and breast, uterine, cervical and ovarian cancers in females. The researchers are interested in what patients with any of these cancers know about the other cancers. A team from Dalhousie University is looking for young breast cancer survivors under the age of 50 to participate in a study examining rehabilitation needs. If you are under 50, 1-5 years post diagnosis and live in Atlantic Canada you may be eligible to participate. Participation involves two telephone interviews. - The Faculty of Medecine, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Dalhousie University has developed an online survey to determine preferences regarding breast reconstruction in women who have undergone a previous mastectomy and reconstruction and are subsequently faced with a mastectomy on the opposite breast. Researchers are interested to know whether a scar pattern's size or its symmetry with respect to the previous reconstruction is more important.
