Eight Year Old Named Winner of 'My Hero' Breast Cancer National Writing Contest;
Awarded $5,000 in Educational Funding

National and regional winners unveiled - Winner's entry shares inspiring story of how collecting shells on the beach, and sharing fish and chips, encouraged grandmother in her fight against breast cancer

TORONTO, Ontario, (October 1, 2007) - Abraxis Oncology, in partnership with Willow Breast Cancer Support Canada, today announced that Hannah Ruth James, aged eight, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, was chosen as National Winner in the 'My Hero' Contest. Four Regional Winners were also named. As the contest sponsor, Abraxis Oncology is proud to contribute $5,000 in educational funding to the National Winner and $2,500 to each Regional Winner to help realize their future dreams.

"We received many incredibly inspiring stories through the eyes of children affected by breast cancer from across the country," said Lyndal Walker, vice president of Abraxis Oncology. "The sad reality is that breast cancer affects so many of us, be it through family or friends, with one in every nine women expected to develop the disease during her lifetime. It is truly heartening to hear how families come together to provide such strength in their love and support for one another in the face of adversity."

Beginning in May, Canadian children aged eight to twelve were asked to submit a short essay on why their mother or other female family member, who has been affected by breast cancer, is their hero. An excerpt from Hannah's entry read: "Nanny is my Hero because, even when she was sick, she still had time for me … Cancer may have made my Nanny sick but didn't change who she is. That's why my Nanny is my Hero!"

"The children we heard from helped in every imaginable way; from helping to educate their friends at school, to getting involved in various fundraising efforts to help further breast cancer research. These stories have certainly given us a very intimate perspective of how breast cancer affects Canadian families," added Lyndal from Abraxis Oncology.

In addition to the National Winner, four Regional Winners were also chosen by a review panel which included members of the Canadian children's media, as well as representatives of Willow Breast Cancer Support Canada. They are: Noah Mowat (aged 12), Ontario region; Lily Francis Mark (aged 10), Atlantic Canada; Jacklyn Scott (aged 12), Central Canada (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba); and Jenna Rasiuk (aged 8), British Columbia - including the Yukon and Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

"Willow knows that each family faces unique challenges and encourages all members to communicate with each other to provide the best support during a diagnosis of breast cancer," said S. Elaine Brown, Executive Director of Willow Breast Cancer Support Canada. "Reading through the many entries for the My Hero Contest demonstrates the power of family support in the fight against cancer."

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian women. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, an estimated 22,300 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007. Five-thousand three hundred women will die of the disease.
