Make a donation

By giving to Willow, both financially and as a support volunteer, you are helping to give individuals living with breast cancer, the dignity to make informed decisions concerning their emotional and medical care. You also support the well-being of their families.

Please consider making a financial donation to Willow.

Companies and individuals who are exceptionally outstanding in their support (>$500) are honoured on our website. Please indicate if you wish not to be included on our donor list.

How to support Willow

Donation of Securities

Recent changes in the tax policy of the Federal Government of Canada have made the donation of securities to Willow Breast Cancer Support Canada more attractive than ever before. You will of course receive a charitable tax receipt for the full amount of the gift. This receipt will then generate a tax credit with a value equal to your marginal tax rate applied as a percentage of the value of your gift.

In addition, you will now be able to transfer the security without owing tax on any accumulated taxable capital gain. This differs from pre-2006 when any such in-kind gift of securities to a charity would require the donor to pay tax on any "deemed" capital gain (when the security was gifted, it was "deemed" to have been sold and capital gains/losses were created in the eyes of the Canada Revenue Agency). Indeed, such gifting can become an effective form of tax planning for your estate as the more assets left to charity, the greater the tax credit that can be created and the fewer taxes that will be paid!

Qualified securities include publicly listed investments such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds, warrants and rights and even some derivatives.

Example:

Mary and Bob wish to give $10,000 worth of stock to Willow. They paid $4,000 for the shares and the investment shows an unrealized capital gain of $6,000. How will this compare to prior years if they wish to gift the shares?

  Sell Stock
Donate Cash
Donate Stock
(prior to 2006)
Donate Stock
(Post May 2, 2006)
Fair Market Value $10,000 $10,000 $10,000
Capital Gain 6,000 6,000 6,000
Cap Gain Tax Rate 50% of gain 25% of gain 0
Taxable Amount 3,000 1,500 0
Tax due on Cap Gain* 1,350 675 0
Tax Receipt for Donation 10,000 10,000 10,000
Charitable Tax Credit* 4,500 4,500 4,500
Tax Refund from Disposal Of Stock 3,150 3,825 4,500

Here, we can see that since May 2, 2006, a tax savings of $675 has accrued to Mary and Bob through the gifting stock rather than selling and giving the cash proceeds.

*We have used a marginal tax rate of 45% for the purposes of this example.

In Memory

Willow is proud to honour the lives of women who have dealt with breast cancer. For each donation, Willow will send out a memorial card to notify the family of your sympathy and support. The card identifies the donor and can include a short personalized message, but does not identify the amount given. We gratefully accept donations in memory/honour of friends and family and would be happy to acknowledge such a gift with a letter. Our charitable registration number is 89551 3737 RR0001.

In Honour

Honour a friend or family member's birthday, anniversary, bar/bat mitzvah, retirement or other special occasion with a gift to Willow. For each donation Willow will send out a commemorative card to the honoree. The card identifies the donor and can include a short personalized message, but does not identify the amount given.

Corporate Matching

Many companies match employee contributions to charitable causes. Matching gifts are an additional contribution over and above a donor's personal gift or pledge. Find out if your company has a corporate matching program; this could double the impact of your donation to Willow.
