I am 39 just found out I have BRCA2 gene in the Fall. I had an oopherectomy in March and just had an MRI biopsy which found two spots that are atypia cells that could turn into cancer. I am a mother of a 2 and 4 year old and now am seriously considering a double mastectomy. I just wanted to know from all of you that have children what did the double mastectomy entail? How long is the recovery? Were you happy with the reconstruction? I just want to make sure I make the right decision. Your feedback would be much appreciated.

Hi,
I'm 37 and my children are exactly the same age as yours. I had a bilateral mastectomy in Feb 2010. I could not have reconstruction at the same time because I needed to have radiation afterwards. It took about two weeks to start feeling somewhat normal. My surgeon told me I could pick up my 30lbs 2 year old soon after my surgery. The area was pretty sensitive for the first month but, it quickly improved. I found the second week following the surgery when I felt the most pain, I guess the nerve endings were awakening, I don't know. Because of the radiation I have yet to wear prosthesis so, I have been wearing flowy tops and layering up until now. It's been very comfortable for me.
I am planning to have reconstruction in Jan 2011, the procedure is called the diep. They take fat tissue from your abdomen and relocate it to your chest. It's very state of the art.
I hope this has helped a little.

I have been doing all my surveillance through North York General. I am still waiting for consult with plastic surgeon. I don't who it is yet. Can't get through to the breast surgeon either. Just sitting and waiting at this point. I don't know what type of surgery I will choose at this point. Getting fat taken out of stomach though sounds good after having two kids.

Hi
I haven't had the surgery yet. It will be done in Toronto. No one does this surgery in my city.
